NEW LONDON, N.H. – The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team was unable to keep pace with the high-powered offense of Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-1 in a non-conference matchup.
The Records:
Farmington dropped to
3-7 on the season following Saturday's setback, while Colby-Sawyer improved to
6-4 overall with the victory.
How It Happened:
The Chargers were led offensively by
Brooke Farquhar, who the Beavers had few answers for. The sophomore tallied
five goals, including a
first-quarter hat trick within the opening 19 minutes of play.
Farquhar scored her first two goals just two minutes apart in the opening six minutes to give the Chargers an early advantage.
Addy Olden assisted on the first, while
Kylie Walden set up the second.
Walden then added an unassisted goal in the 11th minute to extend the lead to 3-0.
Farmington responded quickly as junior
Gabby Vincentsen (Bristol, Maine) made a strong individual play, beating her defender along the endline and slipping a short-range shot past Charger goalkeeper
Addy Araneo to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Farquhar struck again early in the second quarter, capitalizing on a quick Colby-Sawyer counterattack.
Abby Olden found Farquhar wide open on the back post for her third goal of the game, making it 4-1.
Farquhar continued her offensive surge in the third quarter, scoring twice more—both assisted by
Jillian Fredette—as the Chargers extended their lead to 6-1.
Colby-Sawyer added three goals in the fourth quarter: two from
Zoe Dries and one from
Cecilia Ponzini, closing out the 9-1 win.
