WATERVILLE, Maine - On Saturday Afternoon, the University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team battled Thomas College to a 1-1 in the final game of their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) regular season schedule. In earning the tie, the Beavers secured the number two seed in the NAC East Division as well as the number two overall seed for the upcoming conference tournament. The tournament will begin next Saturday. The Beavers will take on Maine Maritime Academy at Husson University as Husson earned the top seed for the tournament.Â
After a scoreless first 85 minutes, the Beavers were awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute. Junior midfielder Audrey Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine) converted the penalty for her team leading ninth goal of the season.Â
The Terriers did not go away after they surrendered the go ahead goal with four minutes to play. Kelsey Currier (Cumberland, Maine) lofted a high kick from around midfield toward the box that drew freshman goalkeeper Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) out of her goal. After a big bounce, Gonya and Terrier forward Emily Gutierrez (Las Vegas, Nevada) converged and collided as the two went for the ball. Gutierrez was able to get her head on it before Gonya could punch it away and the ball ended up in the back of the net tying the game for the Terriers.Â
The Beavers controlled the ball for a majority of the game as they held a 21-6 advantage in shots and an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Beavers also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.Â
Gonya registered two saves for the Beavers while the Terriers had two goalies, Lauren Bartlett (Wells, Maine) and Isabelle Lang (Linconville, Maine) combined to make seven saves for the Terriers.Â
