Regis Scores Three Unanswered in the Second Half to Get Past Farmington

WESTON, Massachusetts Trailing 3-2 at halftime, the Regis College Pride scored three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat the University of Maine at Farmington, 5-3, on Thursday evening in non-conference field hockey action.

The Records:

With the loss, the Beavers dropped to 3-4 on the season, while the Pride improved to 2-3.

How It Happened:

Regis struck first when Anna Miele-DeFelice slipped a close-range shot past sophomore goalkeeper Ella Grant (Sturbridge, Mass.), who had come off her line to challenge a through pass into the circle.

The Beavers responded just 30 seconds later. After drawing a penalty corner, senior Bayley Casavant (Corinth, Maine) inserted the ball to Zoey Pennell (Saco, Maine), who ripped a low shot from the top of the circle past Regis goalkeeper Sarai Velez to even the score at 1-1.

The Pride quickly regained the lead less than three minutes later. Crisp passing through the midfield allowed Regis to push into the offensive zone, where Gabrielle Tolman fed Ava Costello in front of goal. Costello finished the chance, putting Regis back in front 2-1 heading into the second quarter.

UMF answered with two goals in quick succession during the second quarter to take its first lead of the game. Sophomore Mikayla Wilcox (Farmington, Maine) tied the game by pouncing on a loose ball in the circle and firing a backhanded shot into the lower left corner. Minutes later, Casavant gave the Beavers the advantage, again capitalizing on a penalty corner. After inserting the ball, she moved to the back post, where Autumn Freeman (Byron, Maine) found her for an easy finish into the open cage.

The Beavers carried their 3-2 lead into the third quarter and held it until the final seconds. That's when Izzy Cochrane converted off a feed from Mackenzie O'Shea, sending the game into the fourth quarter tied 3-3.

Regis sealed the victory with back-to-back goals midway through the fourth quarter, both from Costello to complete her hat trick.
