FARMINGTON, Maine – University of Maine at Farmington senior sharpshooter Simon Chadbourne (Portland, Maine) set a new program single-season record for three-pointers made, breaking his own record from last season, in the Beavers' 72-66 win over Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday evening in Dearborn Gymnasium.
Chadbourne entered the game with 87 three-pointers on the season, needing two more to break his previous record of 88, set during the 2022-23 season. He achieved the new record at the 5:50 mark of the first half with a deep three-pointer off an assist from Dylan Griffin (Saco, Maine).
The Records:
The victory brings the Beavers back to .500 on the season, improving their record to 11-11 overall and 8-3 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play. The loss drops the Mariners to 12-8 overall and 8-3 in the conference.
How it Happened:
Neither team started particularly strong offensively. The Beavers settled in against the Mariners' zone defense, while Farmington played tough defense, making every shot difficult for Maine Maritime.
Gabe Hagar hit a contested jumper in the lane at the 16:27 mark of the first half, giving the Mariners a 7-5 lead. Over the next 11:02, the Beavers outscored Maine Maritime 29-6 to take a commanding 21-point advantage.
After a few minutes to adjust, Farmington began to dissect the Mariners' zone defense, using quick ball movement, attacking gaps, and making the extra pass to turn good shots into great shots. Chadbourne and sophomore Jason Reynolds (Winslow, Maine) sparked the run for Farmington. Reynolds converted a pair of three-point plays, while Chadbourne began to heat up from beyond the arc, hitting three three-pointers in the first half.
The Mariners didn't give up easily. Trailing 37-16 with just under four and a half minutes remaining in the first half, Maine Maritime closed the half on a 14-7 run to cut the deficit to 14 heading into halftime.
While Farmington's offense had success against Maine Maritime's defense for most of the first half, the second half was a different story. Halftime adjustments and a full-court press disrupted the Beavers' rhythm, and the Mariners quickly made the game competitive again.
Maine Maritime opened the second half with an 11-4 run, trimming the lead to 48-41 with 15:27 left to play. Hagar hit a pair of three-pointers to highlight the run for the Mariners. Chadbourne hit his fifth three-pointer of the game, briefly halting the momentum.
But the Mariners weren't finished. Their defense made it difficult for Farmington, forcing nine second-half turnovers. Maine Maritime also did a great job on the boards, preventing Farmington from getting any offensive rebounds in the second half as they continued to chip away at the lead. A layup by Jack Banks just inside the eight-minute mark cut the lead to four, the closest the game had been since the 15-minute mark of the first half.
After a baseline jumper from Reynolds made it a six-point game, Banks and Curt Heinz hit consecutive layups, reducing Farmington's lead to just two with 4:18 left.
The Beavers responded with back-to-back baskets from Jordan Anthony (Farmington, Conn.) and Griffin to regain a six-point lead.
Three-pointers from Josiah Dancy and Markus Ramirez, along with a layup from Anthony, made it a 63-61 game with 2:17 remaining. After Ramirez's three-pointer, Griffin hit an acrobatic layup to give Farmington a four-point lead again. Dancy answered with two free throws to make it a two-point game.
On the ensuing Farmington possession, with the shot clock winding down, Griffin, about to take a tough contested shot, found a wide-open Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) underneath the basket for an easy layup with 48 seconds left, making it a 67-63 game.
After a turnover on the next Maine Maritime possession, Brock Flagg (Brewer, Maine) made two free throws to seal the game and give Farmington the crucial NAC victory.
