FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team continued their winning ways on Saturday afternoon, taking down SUNY Delhi, 76-39, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Dearborn Gymnasium.
The Records:
Farmington remained unbeaten following Saturday's victory, improving to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Delhi is still searching for its first win, dropping to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in NAC play.
How it Happened:
Fresh off a dominant victory on Friday evening against the reigning NAC Champions, the Beavers started Saturday's game a bit slow, unable to find their shooting range with consistency despite generating high-percentage looks.
As a team, Farmington shot just 6-for-19 in the first quarter, but junior guard Audrey Mackie (South Thomaston, Maine) helped steady the offense. Mackie found gaps in the Broncos' zone, knocking down several midrange jumpers and scoring six of the Beavers' first eight points.
Despite the early offensive struggles, Farmington took care of business defensively, holding Delhi to just 20.0% shooting (3-for-15) in the opening quarter while building a 14-6 lead.
Mackie stayed hot to open the second quarter, drilling a three from the right wing to stretch the lead to eleven. The three came at the 9:03 mark and was followed by four and a half scoreless minutes for the Beavers, allowing the Broncos to chip away at the margin.
After a free throw from Sarah Gaetano, consecutive jumpers from Riley Schmidt and N'Dera Francis cut the lead to 17-11 with just over five minutes remaining until halftime.
A free throw from Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) snapped the scoring drought, and back-to-back layups from Lilly Gray (Benton, Maine) and Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) in the closing moments of the half sent Farmington into the locker room with a 26-17 advantage.
The Beavers flipped a switch coming out of halftime and dominated the third quarter. Farmington's defensive pressure overwhelmed the Broncos, forcing 11 turnovers and holding them to just 1-for-16 shooting from the floor while outscoring them 26-6 to put the game firmly out of reach. Dow tallied six points and recorded two steals in the quarter, while Sarah Poli (Benton, Maine) added two blocks and two steals. Poli and Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) each chipped in five third-quarter points.
Farmington turned to its young bench in the fourth quarter, and the first-years delivered. Ella Rice (Winthrop, Maine), Eva Harvie (Brunswick, Maine), and Gray all stood out. Rice was a defensive force and relentlessly attacked the rim, scoring eight points, grabbing three rebounds, and adding a steal in the quarter. Harvie served as the floor general, dishing out five assists in eight minutes. Gray went a perfect 3-for-3 from the field for six points.
