Beavers Suffer NAC Quarterfinal Setback at Maine Maritime

CASTINE, Maine The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team saw its 2025 season come to an end on Wednesday evening, suffering a 3-2 setback on the road in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) quarterfinal matchup against Maine Maritime Academy.

With the victory, the Mariners advance to the NAC semifinals, where they will travel to Waterville to take on reigning NAC champion Thomas College.

How It Happened

The Beavers surrendered three goals in the opening half of play, digging themselves a difficult hole to climb out of.

The Mariners got on the scoreboard just five minutes and ten seconds into the game on a goal by Aiden Burr. Maine Maritime was awarded a corner kick that Gabriel Toledo took from the left corner. Toledo sent an inswinging ball into the penalty area that forced Beaver goalkeeper Dylan Gagnon (Hudson, N.H.) off his line to punch the ball away. Gagnon successfully disrupted the cross, but the deflection landed at the feet of Burr, who one-timed a shot off the right post and into the net to make it 1-0.

Toledo doubled the Mariner advantage just seven minutes later, tucking a left-footed shot past the diving Gagnon. The goal developed after the Mariners won possession in the midfield off a Farmington throw-in. The Beavers scrambled to recover defensively, setting up Toledo to make a well-timed overlapping run. James Baur found Toledo in stride, and Toledo took one touch before finding the back of the net to make it 2-0 just 12 minutes in.

Maine Maritime extended its lead to three in the 41st minute on a goal by John-John Dickenson. After a Beaver turnover in their attacking third, the Mariners countered quickly. Toledo sent a long through ball onto the foot of Dickenson, who beat one defender before sliding a shot into the back of the net for a 3-0 advantage.

The Mariners carried their 3-0 lead into the second half, but the Beavers refused to go quietly. Farmington adjusted its formation to push more players forward, creating sustained pressure on the Mariner back line. The Beavers outshot Maine Maritime 9-4 in the second half and were finally rewarded in the 66th minute. First-year midfielder Garrett Gendreau (Waterville, Maine) collected a failed clearance and fired a low shot on frame that slipped through the hands and legs of Mariner goalkeeper Reagan Moynihan, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Farmington continued to push the pace and struck again just six minutes later. The Beavers quickly turned defense into offense with a clearance that found Jack Luciano (Gorham, Maine) in the middle of the field. Luciano turned and played a ball down the left wing to Owen Spera (Gorham, Maine), who beat a defender and found Gendreau at the top of the penalty area. Gendreau turned and made a quick square pass to Rafael Harron (Belmont, Calif.), who took one touch before firing a low shot to Moynihan's left. Moynihan's diving attempt came up short, pulling the Beavers within one at 3-2.

Farmington managed three more shot attempts after Harron's goal, but none were on frame as the Mariners held on to eliminate the Beavers for the second consecutive season.
