Beavers Open Season With Blow Out Win Over UMA

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team opened their 2024 season in grand fashion, scoring seven goals from six different players en route to a 7-2 win over the visiting University of Maine at Augusta on Tuesday afternoon at Leib Field.

How It Happened:

The Moose jumped out to an early lead when Gabby Allen capitalized on a Beaver mistake inside their own penalty area, sliding a low shot into the side netting in the 10th minute.

The Beavers responded quickly, scoring three goals in eight and a half minutes to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. Junior transfer Natalie Tracy (Oakland, Maine) tied the game in the 23rd minute, making a series of moves to beat a pair of defenders before firing a left-footed shot past the UMA goalkeeper.

First-year midfielder Jenna Lee (Farmingdale, Maine) gave the Beavers the lead in the 29th minute, tallying her first collegiate goal off a feed from Tracy.

After being named a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Player to Watch for the 2024 season, Abby Lash (Waldoboro, Maine) lived up to the hype in a big way. Lash scored a goal and provided three assists, helping extend the Beavers' lead to 6-1. Her goal came in the 32nd minute when she lifted a long-range shot from deep in the left corner over the head of Moose goalkeeper Vanessa Wharton and into the net.

Lash continued her strong performance in the second half, assisting Tracy's second goal of the game in the 53rd minute, finding a wide-open Grace Mahmood (Oxford, Conn.) on the goal line for an effortless score, and delivering a beautiful cross to Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine), who headed the ball into the net.

Allen scored her second goal of the game in the 81st minute to make it 6-2, with Lena Mau picking up the assist.

Hannah Milliken (Greene, Maine) added her first goal of the season with a well-placed shot past Wharton, and Hailey Brewer (Harrison, Maine) earned the assist, marking her first point of her collegiate career.

The Goalkeepers:

Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) made one save to secure her first win of the season. Wharton made five saves in the losing effort.

Team Stats:

The Beavers held significant advantages in shots (30-7), shots on goal (12-3), and corner kicks (11-1).
