3rd Quarter Surge Pushes Terriers Past Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine - Leading 6-1 after the opening 30 minutes, the visiting Thomas College Terriers scored six goals in the 3rd quarter to run away with a 12-1 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Prescott Field. Saturday's contest marked the inaugural matchup in the newly minted Central Maine Collegiate Field Hockey Conference.

The Records:

The Beavers are looking for their first win of the season, exiting play today with an 0-7 record. With the win today, Thomas improves to 6-2 on the season.

How it Happened:

The Terriers offense got rolling early. Maci Freeman kicked off the scoring making a smooth forehand-backhand move in front of the goal to beat sophomore goalkeeper Ella Grant (Sturbridge, Mass.) for the games first tally. 

Julia Reny doubled the Terrier lead just minutes later, scoring her first of three goals on the afternoon.

Autumn Freeman (Byron, Maine) got the Beavers on the scoreboard, scoring her first goal of the season and cutting the Terrier lead in half, rifling a shot past Elise Syphers.

Samantha Thebarge rifled a shot past Grant in the closing seconds of the 1st quarter off a well executed penalty corner. 

Thomas started to take control of the game in the 2nd quarter, outshooting the Beavers 12-0 in the quarter and amassing 13 penalty corners. Hilary Howard, Thebarge, and Julia Reny notching goals in the quarter to send the Terriers into halftime with a 6-1 advantage.

The 3rd quarter was more of the same offensively for Thomas, scoring six goals to open the game up. Thomas outshot the Beavers 13-2 in the period and registered seven more penalty corners. Reny and Thebarge each tallied a pair of goals in the quarter while Howard and Freeman each picked up their second goals of the day. 

Thebarge finished with four goals to lead the Terriers offensively. Reny added three goals and three assists while Howard and Freeman each picked up a pair of goals.

Team Stats:

Thomas held advantages in shots (31-9), shots on goal (28-5), and penalty corners (29-7) in picking up their 6th win of the season.

The Goalkeepers:

Grant started in goal for the Beavers, playing the first half and making 11 saves. Charlotte Beckwith (Hamdpen, Maine) took over for Grant in the 2nd half and registered five saves. Sypher played the first three quarters and picked up two saves. Mackenzie Toner played the 4th quarter and tallied two saves.

The Beavers host Husson University next Saturday at 12:00 PM in another Central Maine College Field Hockey Conference matchup.
