Beavers Suffer Season-Opening Loss to Simmons

HENNIKER, NH - The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team kicked off their 2024 campaign on Friday evening taking on Simmons University in game one of the New England College Classic in Henniker, New Hampshire. The Sharks jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, topping the Beavers, 6-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Sharks were staked to an early 1-0 lead as Sydney Gonyea scored her first of three first half goals six minutes and 37 seconds into the first quarter off a dish from Ainslee Shrout. Just two minutes later, Anna Tedeschi hit the cage to double Simmons' lead. Emilia Elko picked up the helper on Tedeschi's goal.

The 2nd quarter was more of the same for the Sharks. Gonyea scored a pair of goals a minute and seven seconds apart to help Simmons snag a 4-0 lead heading into halftime.

Tedeschi and the Sharks jumped out quickly in the 3rd quarter as she notched her 2nd goal of the game, an unassisted tally 42 seconds into the 2nd half. Tedeschi scored her hat-trick marker with ten minutes to play in the 4th quarter, making it a 6-0 game.

The Beavers were unable to mount any pressure offensively, registering no shots on goal for the game.

TEAM STATS:

Simmons held advantages in shots (36-0), shots on goal (22-0), and penalty corners (17-0) in the contest.

THE GOALIES:

Fresh off from finishing inside the top-five in all of NCAA Division III in saves per game, sophomore goalkeeper Ella Grant (Sturbridge, Mass.) picked up right where she left off, registering 16 saves in the season-opening loss. Haley Bright played the first 45 minutes of the game and Trinity Williamson closed out the final 15 to combine for the shutout victory.
