Husson Pitching Leads to Doubleheader Sweep of Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine - Husson University used a pair of strong performances from Danielle Masterson and Ava Long to take down the University of Maine at Farmington in an important North Atlantic Conference (NAC) softball doubleheader at Prescott Field.

Game One

Masterson was masterful, allowing just one base runner, a Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) walk to lead off the 3rd inning. Masterson went five innings, striking out seven to secure the 11-0 victory.

The Eagles got on the board right away in the top of the 1st inning. Jess Pomerleau hit a one out double to left center field, moved over to 3rd on a ground out, and scored on an error to give Husson a 1-0 lead.

Katie Raymond delivered a two-RBI triple over the head of Beaver center fielder Jojo Daigneualt (Canton, Conn.) to score Kiara McLeod and Lydia Rice, increasing Husson's lead to 3-0 through an inning and a half.

First-year starting pitcher Mack Bergen (Winnipeg, Manitoba) settled in in the top of the 3rd, inducing three week contact outs to breeze through the inning.

After the quick 3rd, the top of the 4th was a long inning for Bergen and the Beavers. Rice was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and McLeod followed with a double, putting a pair of runners in score position with nobody out. After an Olivia McCarty walk to load the bases, Raymond lifted a SAC fly to center field to score Rice and make it a 4-0 game. Pomerleau drew a walk to reload the bases and Bulla McCabe followed with a two-run double making it a 6-0 game and chasing Bergen from the ballgame.

Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) gave up an RBI groundout to record the 2nd out of the inning. After a Kenzie Dore RBI single made it an 8-0 lead, Julia Gregoire reached on an error to extend the inning. Dore scored later in the inning on an error and McLeod laced an two-RBI single through the right side to open up an 11-0 lead.

The Beavers just could not get anything going offensively against Masterson, who picked up her 6th win of the season.

Game Two

Game two was a pitchers duel through the first four innings. Dore delivered an RBI single in the top of the first as the Eagles took an early 1-0 lead. But that was the only offense either team could muster until the 5th inning.

Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) had everything working in the circle for the Beavers. After allowing a walk and two hits in the top of the 1st, Mayo only allowed one baserunner through the next three innings.

On the other side, Long continued to keep the Beavers' offense quiet. Long retired the first seven batters she faced in the ball game. Dow laced a single to right field to record Farmington's first hit of the day in the bottom of the 3rd.

Defense hurt Farmington in the top of the 5th. Husson scored five runs on just two hits and three Beaver errors to open up a 6-0 lead. A pair of errors and a walk loaded the bases for Husson with two outs. Mayo appeared to be out of the inning as Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) made a diving play at the hot corner but the throw was not handled at 1st base allowing two runs to score. Tori Exel followed with an RBI single to right and Gregoire added an RBI double to open up the six-run Eagles lead.

Farmington's offense had been quiet all day, but came alive in a big way in the bottom of the 5h. Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine) drew a one out walk to give Farmington their second base runner of the game. Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) followed with a single to center, and Dow reached base on an error to load the bases. After Masterson retired Katie Morse (Dixfield, Maine) to record the second out of the inning, Abby Wrinn (Wolcott, Conn.) hit an infield singled to shortstop to score Miller. Daigneault followed with a two-run single to make it a three-run ball game.

Mayo continued to roll in the 6th and the 7th inning, retiring the Eagles in order in each inning. After the big 5th, Farmington couldn't get another runner on base, dropping game two 6-3. With the two losses, the Beavers dropped to 4-2 in NAC play.
