Baseball Falls on the Road Against Division I Maine

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team dropped a non-conference contest on the road against in-state and NCAA Division I opponent the University of Maine at Orono, 14-4.

The Beavers offense got rolling early against the Black Bears, posting four runs in the top of the 1st inning. Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) and Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Maine) led off the game with back-to-back walks to get the rally started. After a Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) fly out for the first out of the inning, Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) delivered an RBI single into left field, bringing home Marquis and giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead.

The next batter was Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) who delivered an infield single to load the bases with just one out. Jonny Pruett (Waterford, Maine) followed with a single of his own, allowing Bloch to score. Two batters later, Cal Tibbitts (Bath, Maine) delivered a two-RBI single to help the Beavers jump out to a 4-0 lead after a half an inning.

The Beavers lead did not last long as the Black Bears responded with a four spot in the bottom of the 1st to tie the game up. The Black Bears drew four walks and stole seven bases in the inning to piece together their four runs. Nick White delivered an RBI single and Myles Sargent added a two-run single of his own.

The Beavers had a golden opportunity to take the lead once again in the top of the 2nd, loading the bases with just one out. But a pop out and a fly out put an end to the Beavers' threat.

Orono took the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning when Jeremiah Jenkins hit a two-out single, moved over to 2nd on a wild pitch and scored on an error.

Jenkins did more damage in the bottom of the 4th, crushing a two-run home run to the opposite field to extend the Black Bears' lead to 7-4. White scored on an error and Dean O'Neill delivered a SAC fly later in the inning to make it 9-4 Maine after four.

Orono scored a pair in the 6th and three more in the 8th to make it a 14-4 game. The Beavers recorded four hits in the first inning but were held to just one hit in the final eight innings of the game.

Coombs recorded a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Beavers offensively. Seven Farmington pitchers combined to give up 13 earned runs, striking out three. Kyle Sawyer (Saco, Maine) pitched two scoreless innings of relief, giving up just one hit.

Jenkins led the offensive attack for the Black Bears, going 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Will Burns went 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Sargent was 2-for-4 with three runs driven in and one run scored.
