PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team got goal contributions from four different players en route to picking up a 4-2 win on the road against the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Wednesday afternoon. The win for the Beavers marks their first of the young season.
Senior Emily Boyle (Orleans, Mass.) scored the 1st goal of the day on a beautiful left-footed feed from fellow senior Audrey Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine). Fletcher received a pass near midfield, took on three defenders, beating all three before laying off a thru-ball to Boyle who took a touch around Owl goalkeeper Marissa Havey and slid a shot into the back of the net to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.
The UMF lead only lasted just a minute and two seconds as UMPI's Alexis Ireland scored an unassisted marker to knot the game up at one 18 minutes into the game.Â
First-year Rita Benoit (Hallowell, Maine) had the answer for the Beavers in the 29th minute. Fletcher served in a corner kick towards the back post where Benoit was waiting and headed the ball into the back of the net to pick up her first collegiate goal and give Farmington a 2-1 lead.
But the Owls once again had an answer as Kourtney West re-tied the game with a goal in the final minute of the 1st half on a feed from Taylor Marston.
The Beavers came out of the halftime intermission of the attack. Senior Sydney Belanger (Wells, Maine) took a feed around the penalty stripe from junior Abby Lash (Waldoboro, Maine) and one timed a shot past Havey to once again give the Beavers a one-goal advantage.
Just two and a half minutes after Belanger gave Farmington the lead, Fletcher doubled it with a goal of her own. Fletcher and Lash hooked up on a beautifully executed double give-and-go as Lash fed Fletcher at the top of the penalty area. Fletcher then relayed the ball back to Lash on the left wing and sprinted to the front of the net. Lash whipped in a night cross to the top of the six-yard box, finding Fletcher who headed the ball into the back of the net to give the Beavers a 4-2 lead and finish off Wednesday afternoon's scoring.
The Beavers kept the pressure on the Owls throughout the afternoon, putting up 27 shots, including 17 on frame while also winning nine corner kicks. The Owls registered 12 shots with seven on net and one corner kick.Â
Fletcher finished the afternoon with a goal and two assists while Lash added a pair of assists to pace the Beavers offensive attack. Sophomore goalkeeper Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) picked up five saves.Â
Havey and Maggee Currie combined to make 13 saves for the Owls.
The Beavers moved to 1-1-1 on the season after the win. The defeat moves the Owls to 0-2 to start the season.
