Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Broncos Score Three Unanswered to get Past the Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine - After falling behind in the 17th minute, the SUNY Delhi Broncos topped the University Maine at Farmington women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Leib Field in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) cross-over contest.

The Broncos appeared to have the momentum during the opening 15 minutes of the game, tallying the first four shots of the game. The Beavers were able to score on their first shot of the game when Audrey Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine) found the back of the net for the 10th time this season. Abby Lash (Waldoboro, Maine) sent a left-footed cross into the box that deflected off the left foot of Grace Mahmood (Oxford, Maine) right to Fletcher who beautifully placed a shot past Bronco goalkeeper Vanessa Sanchez.

Sanchez made a pair of big saves back to back in the next few minutes to keep the Beaver advantage at just one. Mahmood ripped a shot that Sanchez lept and was able to get enough of to deflect it off the crossbar.

Not long after it looked like Mahmood had made it 2-0 Beavers, the Broncos tied the game up at one when Kayla Beers found the back of the net off a feed from Reanen Goodspeed.

SUNY Delhi was able to take a 2-1 lead when Lizzetta Myers powered in a rebound. Jacey Nieckarz ripped a shot from the right wing that Beaver goalkeeper Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) made a diving save to her right. The rebound deflected off the post right to Myers who just ran the ball into the net.

The Beavers looked to tie the game up at two before halftime as Fletcher appeared to have scored for the 2nd time. After Sanchez broke up a cross attempt, the ball squirted away from her as Fletcher took the ball away from her and put it into the back of the net. Unfortunately for the Beavers the officials ruled that Sanchez had possession of the ball and no goal was the ruling.

The Beavers continued to bring the pressure in the 2nd half, out shooting the Broncos 9-4 in the half. But Sanchez made some outstanding saves to keep the Beavers at bay. Despite the immense pressure the Beavers were unable to secure the tying goal.

Kaitlyn Hines picked up the insurance marker in the 86th minute, firing home a one-timer off a feed from Ayla Vorisek.

Lash had a fantastic opportunity to cut the deficit back to one just a minute later, but once again Sanchez stood tall to make the key save.

Following the loss the Beavers dropped to 5-7-1 on the season. The Broncos improve to 8-1-2.
