FARMINGTON, Maine - Sophomore midfielder Hannah Wilbur (Farmington, Maine) and senior midfielder Audrey Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine) each scored a goal in the second half to help lead the Beavers to a North Atlantic Conference 2-0 victory against Thomas College at home on Tuesday afternoon.
The first half of play was fairly even with both teams having some opportunities to score. However, the Beavers had a pair of point blank chances that did not result in goals that kept the score knotted at zero heading into halftime. In the 18th minute junior forward Abby Lash (Waldoboro, Maine) sent a beautiful ball into the box to a streaking Grace Mahmood (Oxford, Conn.). Mahmood ran onto the ball, and ripped a one-timer that went over the head of Terrier goalkeeper Emily Rock and skimmed the top of the cross bar, going out of bounds for a goal kick.
Just three minutes later, Lash whipped another cross into the box that brought Rock off her line, diving to break up the pass. Rock was able to get her hands on the ball but she deflected it right to Boyle who was all alone. Boyle tried to rip a one-time shot but the ball hopped up on her a bit and the shot sailed high of the net.
Wilbur has been an outside back for the Beavers for the past two seasons. Recently she has made the change to the midfield and the move paid dividends for Farmington today. Fletcher beat a pair of defenders on the right wing and carried the ball into the corner. She sent a low cross into the box that found its way to Wilbur who redirected the pass up in the air that got over Rock and into the back of the net for the first goal of her collegiate career.
In the 78th minute, Fletcher scored a goal of her own, her 7th of the season, doubling the Beavers lead. Fletcher won the ball in the middle of the field and sent a ball to the corner for first-year Rita Benoit (Hallowell, Maine). After delivering the ball to Benoit, Fletcher kept working and got to the front of the net where Benoit delivered a cross right onto Fletcher's head. Fletcher just had to run through the ball as Rock did not have a chance to save the ball from going into the net.
Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) had another strong game in net for the Beavers. The sophomore made five saves to pick up her 3rd individual shutout of the season.
With the win the Beavers improve to 4-6-1 on the season and 2-1 in NAC conference play. The Terriers record now sits at 3-7-0 with a 1-2 record in the NAC.
