Beavers Show Strong Fight But Fall to Eagles

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team fell behind early, battled all night, but were unable to overcome the Husson University Eagles on Friday evening in Dearborn Gymnasium. Following the loss the Beavers dropped to 2-14 on the season with a 1-6 record in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play. The Eagles continued their strong play and improved to 12-5 on the year with an unbeaten 6-0 record in NAC play.

The Eagles got off to a hot start, shooting the lights out in the 1st quarter, hitting 7-11 three-pointers and tallied a 27-9 lead after one quarter. In the 1st quarter the Eagles were led by Sophie McVicar who shot a scorching 3-3 from three-point land to tally nine points.

In the 2nd quarter freshman guard Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) got going for the Beavers tallying eight points on 3-6 shooting from the field including hitting a pair of three-pointers. Despite the hot shooting from Dwyer, the Eagles extended their lead and led 45-23 going into halftime.

In the 3rd quarter the Beavers were able to cut into the Eagles lead, bringing the deficit to 17 on a pair of occasions. The Beavers shot 5-11 from the field in the quarter but turned the ball over eight times and fell behind 66-37 after three quarters. Bailey Donovan got going in the 3rd quarter for the Eagles tallying 13 points and grabbing four boards.

The 4th quarter for the Beavers belonged entirely to Maddy White (Waldoboro, Maine). White scored 12 of the 14 points in the quarter for the Beavers while shooting a perfect 4-4 from the field, hitting a pair of three, and 2-2 from the free throw line. White was aggressive all quarter for the Beavers making several things happen. 

The Eagles showed great depth all night. 14 of the 15 players who entered the game tonight for the Eagles registered a made field goal. Donovan was the high-scorer as she tallied 19 points and added eight rebounds on the evening. Hannah Richards added 10 points.

For the Beavers, Maddy White's huge 4th quarter helped lead her to tallying a team-high 16 points on perfect 5-5 shooting from the field. Dwyer also added 12 points for Farmington.

These two teams will face-off with one another tomorrow afternoon, this time in Bangor. Tip-off is set for 3 pm.
