Beavers Score Three in the Second Half to Take Care of Wildcats

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - The UMaine-Farmington women's soccer team scored three goals in the second half to fight off the Cazenovia College Wildcats 3-2 on the road on Sunday afternoon. Following the victory the Beavers improve to 6-5-2 and 3-1-2 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play while the Wildcats drop to 3-8-2 and 3-4 in NAC contests.

The Wildcats kicked off the scoring in the first half in the ninth minute when Jenicah Brown (Cortland, N.Y.) converted a penalty kick to give the Wildcats the early lead. The score would remain 1-0 into the second half.

Senior midfielder Emily Boyle (Orleans, Mass.) tied the game for the Beavers in the 69th minute. Boyle launched a rocket from outside of 30 yards that Wildcat goalkeeper Kaylana Criasia (Bellingham, Mass.) made the initial save as she tried to deflect it over the bar. However she didn't get enough on it to get it over the bar and it bounced into the net.

The Wildcats would respond a minute and a half later to regain the lead when Brown scored her second of the game off an assist from Jaylah Cossin (Silver Creek, N.Y.).

The Beavers had the answer just three minutes later when sophomore forward Grace Mahmood (Oxford, Conn.) beat Criasia to tie the game at two. Junior midfielder Sydney Belanger (Wells, Maine) fed a ball down the sideline that allowed junior midfielder Audrey Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine) to run on to it. Fletcher carried the ball down the sideline before crossing it into the box where Criasia dove in an bid to break up the cross. Criasia was unable to deflect the pass and it found Mahmood who put it away into the open net.

The Beavers would break the tie in the 76th minute when Mahmood would return the favor and find Fletcher for the game winner. Mahmood won a cross inside the box and fed it to the back post where Fletcher was able to finish it and give the Beavers the victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) started in net for the Beavers and registered two saves in the first half before giving way to junior Lily Souza (Wiscasset, Maine) who added three saves.

The Beavers held a 14-11 advantage in shots, both teams had seven on net. The Beavers also held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
