Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine -- A late first half score from the Beavers and a strong showing to open the second half were not quite enough to carry the day as the University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team fell to visiting in-state rival Southern Maine, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at Leib Field.
UMaine-Farmington spotted Southern Maine an early 2-0 lead. The Huskies' Catriona Gould scored on a shot from inside the six-yard box in the eighth minute, off an assist from Katherine Clancy, to put USM up 1-0. The Huskies doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 13th minute, with Ciera Berthiaume beating out a UMaine-Farmington defender to get to the ball, and putting a shot past UMF keeper Callie Hammer from inside the 18-yard box.
The Beavers got on the board in the 37th minute, with Audrey Fletcher's first collegiate goal reducing the Huskies' lead to 2-1. Fletcher stripped a Southern Maine defender of the ball and scored from nearly 25 yards out with a shot over the head of the USM keeper.
UMaine-Farmington took the battle to Southern Maine over the early part of the second half, nearly netting the game-tying score in the 58th minute with a Fletcher blast that caromed off the crossbar.
Southern Maine clinched the win in the 86th minute on Gould's second score of the day, off an pass from Katie Lynch.
Southern Maine outshot UMaine-Farmington, 28-8, with Hammer charting 11 saves for the 10th double-digit save performance of her career. The Huskies' Bre Atwood and Hunter Stonebraker split the duties in goal, with Atwood getting credit for the win.
UMaine-Farmington women's soccer has a quick turnaround before returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 4, when it faces Plymouth State in a 3:30 p.m. match at Leib Field.
