Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team survived a late challenge from visiting Maine Maritime Academy, and emerged with a 2-1 triumph over the Mariners on Saturday afternoon at Leib Field.
Senior forward McKenna Brodeur accounted for both UMaine-Farmington goals, both in the waning minutes of the opening half.
Brodeur's first of the game came in the 42nd minute on a blast from nearly 40 yards out from the right side of the field, that sailed into the left side of the Maine Maritime goal. That goal was Brodeur's 10th of the season, making her a double-digit goal scorer all four years of her UMaine-Farmington career.
She completed the brace just 70 seconds later. Brodeur sent a screamer at the Maine Maritime goal from just outside the 18-yard box, and the ball deflected off the hands of Mariner keeper Bess MacArthur and into the side-netting to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead. First year Aurelia Maietta was credited with the assist, her first of the season.
Maine Maritime changed marking assignments in the second half, leading to the contest becoming an ongoing battle for possession in the midfield. The Mariners began to pose more of a challenge as the game passed the 80th minute of play, with unsuccessful attempts coming from Emma White and Margot Simeon including one shot off the crossbar.
The Mariners finally broke through in the 86th minute. Suzanne Wooldridge's attempt from 35-yards out made it through traffic in the UMaine-Farmington box and found the back of the net, cutting the margin to 2-1.
UMaine-Farmington keeper Callie Hammer charted four saves in the victory, while MacArthur was not credited with a stop. Maine Maritime outshot UMaine-Farmington, 10-5, and had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Beavers are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 16, when they face Northern Vermont-Johnson in a road matchup. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
