Deans propels field hockey to overtime win

Box Score

FARMINGTON -- Emma Deans (Gorham, Maine) scored 3:54 into overtime lifted the University of Maine at Farmington to a 3-2 victory over Thomas College in non-conference action this afternoon at Prescott Field.

The Beavers (11-4) -- earning their fifth OT win of the season -- are scheduled to host Husson University in a key North Atlantic Conference clash Friday at 3:30 p.m. It is the regular-season finale for Farmington. The Terriers (5-9) are slated to take on St. Joseph's College in Waterville in NAC action Saturday at 11 a.m.

Deans' unassisted marker capped a wild win for the Beavers, who held a 33-4 shot command in the contest. Emma Daniel (Acton, Maine) worked the ball from the back and passed up ahead to Deans, whose individual effort led to the game-winner.

Hattie Laliberte (Guilford, Maine) led Farmington with a goal and an assist, while Elise Theriault (Winslow, Maine) scored a goal and Samantha Webster (Dixfield, Maine) had an assist.

Sarah Estes (Brewer, Maine) and Kristin Masessa (Montville, Maine) each tallied a goal for the Terriers.

Laliberte opened the scoring at 13:10 for a 1-0 lead for the hosts, but the Terriers evened the game at 1-1 when Masessa deflected an Ali Kriegel (Winslow, Maine) blast at 16:33. Theriault followed off a Laliberte assist at 25:46 for a 2-1 Farmington advantage at intermission.

An unassisted goal by Estes at 57:02 knotted the contest at 2-2. The Beavers outshot the visitors 15-1 and took 21 penalty corners in the second half, but were unable to get another regulation score.

The Terriers opened overtime with a penalty corner and a Masessa bid that Farmington keeper Sarah Brown (Windham, Maine) was able to knock away. Farmington's first shot in the extra session was Deans' as the senior netted her second overtime game-winner of the season for the 3-2 victory.

Thomas netminder Megan Denby (Copiague, N.Y.) fended off 24 of the 33 shots that she faced. The senior made three saves and withstood seven corners in the final seven minutes of regulation.

Brown stopped a pair of shots for Farmington.
