Beavers Drop Both Ends of Doubleheader with Lasell

NEWTON, Mass. - The University of Maine at Farmington took on Lasell University this afternoon in their first doubleheader in New England after playing eight games in South Carolina a week ago. The Beavers dropped both ends of the doubleheader, falling 3-0 in game one and 4-3 in game two.

Game One

The Beavers offense was unable to get much going against Eryn Sheeley who had things working for her in the circle for the Lasers. First-year shortstop Abby Wrinn (Canton, Conn.) led off the game with a single to left to give the Beavers a baserunner right away. But that was the only hit the Beavers would get for the remainder of the game as Sheeley retired 21 of the next 24 batters she faced to record the shutout.

Opposite of Sheeley, first-year Mack Bergen (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was on top of her game in the circle for the Beavers. After Bergen gave up a single to Abigail Fortin to open up the bottom of the 1st, she retired the next seven batters she faced before giving up a single to Ally Kirck in the bottom of the 3rd.

The Beavers best opportunity to score came in top of the 2nd. Bergen led off the inning with a walk and moved over to 2nd on a wild pitch to give the Beavers a runner in scoring postion with nobody out. After Grace Pratt (Rockland, Maine) struck out looking, Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) also drew a walk, giving the Beavers 1st and 2nd with one away. Sheeley got Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) and Emily Collins (Moscow, Maine) to strikeout and end the threat.

The single from Kirck with one out in the bottom of the 3rd started a mini rally for the Lasers. She stole 2nd and moved up to 3rd on a two-out single from Brianna Gendreau. Gendreau quickly stole 2nd to give the Lasers a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs in the inning. The next batter was Mackenzie Still who wrapped an infield single to shortstop to bring home Kirck and give the Lasers a 1-0 lead.

The Lasers tacked on a pair of runs in bottom of the 4th on an RBI triple from Alyssa Bland and an RBI double from Kirck to chase Bergen from the ballgame.

Junior Carleigh Schievink took over in the circle for Bergen, going 2.1 innings of scoreless relief and surrendering just one hit. Bergen went 3.2 innings, scattering seven hits and giving up three earned runs while striking out three.

Sheeley finished the complete game shutout with 14 strikeouts while giving up just one hit and a pair of walks. Gendreau and Kirck each had a pair of hits to lead the Lasers offensively.

Game Two

After being held scoreless for the first time this season in game one, the Beavers offense got going early in game two. Jojo Daigneault (Canton, Conn.) drew a one-out walk, stole 2nd base and came around to score on an RBI single from Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine)

Mayo got the ball in the circle for the Beavers in game two. After a scoreless bottom of the 1st, Lasell tied the game in the 2nd inning as Bland singled home Sheeley who led off the inning with a double.

Farmington wasted no time reclaiming the lead in the top of the 3rd. Daigneault led off the inning with a single to left field. Sophomore third baseman Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) followed with a triple to deep right field to bring home Daigneault and give the Beavers a 2-1 lead. Pike came into score later in the inning on an error to double the Beavers lead.

Mayo worked out of two-out trouble in the bottom of the 3rd but could not escape more trouble in the bottom of the 4th. After Mayo struck out Emily Rondeau to lead off the inning, back-to-back singles from Emily Mestas and Bland gave the Lasers runners at 1st and 2nd with one down. Mayo got Kirck to pop out for the 2nd out of the inning. But Fortin delivered a clutch two-out double to left center, scoring both Mestas and Fortin to knot the game up at three. Gendreau followed with a single to center that brought in Fortin and helped the Lasers claim their first lead of the game. Rita Benoit (Hallowell, Maine) took over pitching duties for Mayo and got Shyanne Raccio to ground out to stop any further damage.

The Beavers drew back-to-back one out walks in the top of the 6th innings to have the tying run on 2nd base but were unable to get the timely hit when they needed it.

After being held to just one hit in game one, the Beavers scattered seven hits in game two. Daigneault led the Beavers, going 2-3 with a pair of runs scored and a walk. Pike and Allen each went 1-4 with an RBI. Mayo went 3.2 innings giving up four earned on ten hits and striking out three. Benoit went 2.1 innings in relief and did not give up a single hit.

Fortin picked up the win in the circle, going all seven innings, surrendering three earned on seven hits and striking out five. Gendreau, Katie Hopkins, and Bland all recorded a pair of hits for the Lasers.
